How it works.
To become a fully qualified driving instructor you have to pass three tests with the DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency). All of these tests are at DVSA centres. You are required to pay for each test separately with the DVSA. The three tests follow a similar format to the L driver tests. Through teaching learner drivers on intensive courses we find that pupils progress more quickly through the course when the separate parts are studied together. Theory, hazard perception and driving are all part of the same skillset and learning them side by side improves your grasp of the whole process. We use the same ideology with your driving instructor training course. We have dedicated teaching for each part of the test but we teach each part side by side, this helps you to understand the whole process quickly. We also have specifically designed learning material that is focused on each topic and comprehensively covers the full spectrum of teaching learner drivers.
Our instructor training course is taught over two, 5 day weeks. During week one you will learn your theory & hazard perception, driving to a professional standard and instructional techniques.
You are required to pass Part 1 and Part 2 of the DVSA qualification process before you progress onto week two.
During week two you will learn about teaching L drivers, suitable L driver learning routes/areas, how to run your diary and the best option for you upon qualification as an ADI. We want all of our trainees to join us at our expanding driving school but we will not pressure you to do this. It is your career and you are completely in control of your chosen career path. You might want to join a local or national driving school or even go out on your own. Whatever decision you make we will give you our full support and help you achieve your target. At the end of week two you will be at the DVSA required standard to apply for your PDI licence to teach learner drivers. You don’t have to pass any additional tests to achieve PDI status.
As a PDI you will be able to teach learner drivers for reward. You can charge whatever the going rate for lessons is. You might want to use this licence to boost your current salary. Some PDI’s use their licence to teach full time, although we don’t necessarily recommend this route because you are not fully qualified until you pass the Part 3 test.
Part 1 is a Theory and Hazard perception test. At InstructorTrain we will give you 15 hours of dedicated in-class training at our instructor training centre. You will be provided with DVSA approved study material including four essential books and two DVD’s (a Theory DVD and a Hazard perception DVD). You will also get 8 hours of Part 2 training and 10 hours of Part 3 training.
At the end of week one you will be able to book your Part 1 test. When you pass Part 1 you will be able to take the Part 2 test.
Part 2 is a test of your driving ability. You will receive 8 hours of professional in-car training for Part 2 and our training manual ‘The Driving Test Are you ready for it?’. To pass this test you need to be able to drive safely in different road and traffic conditions, complete two reversing exercises and show, through your driving, that you have a thorough knowledge of the Highway Code. You will have done most of your studying for Part 2 when you prepared for your theory test.
After completing your week two training you can apply for a PDI licence. You do not have to sit any additional tests to receive a PDI licence. On receipt of this licence you can teach for reward. Whilst you are a PDI licence holder you must have 20 hours of additional training, or 20 percent of your lessons supervised to ensure that you are fully prepared for Part 3.
Part 3 is a test of your instructional ability. You will receive a total of 40 hours of professional training for Part 3. During this test you will teach a lesson, decided by you, to one of your own pupils. The test will last about one hour. You will need to show the examiner that you can teach the relevant content of the lesson, deliver it at the correct level for the pupil, be able to correct any driving faults and adapt your lesson to the specific needs of the pupil you are teaching.
The following books have been specifically written by us to help get you through Parts 2 and 3 of the qualification process. They have been designed by us with the sole purpose of giving you the best training possible during your course. You will also be able to use the manuals during the Part 3 test and when you are a fully qualified ADI to help keep you teaching at the very best standard.
These manuals are only used by us! They are not available at any other training establishments.
‘The Driving Test: Are you ready for it?’ is a manual covering the correct procedures for driving safely in different road and traffic conditions. It deals with all aspects of the DVSA driving test including how to prepare for it, how the test is conducted, general driving ability, reversing manoeuvres and the ‘show me, tell me’ questions. Each driving skill is covered separately and has a full colour illustration alongside it.
‘Part III Test of Instructional Ability: Phase 1 and Phase 2 Briefings’ are two uniquely designed manuals with full briefings of every lesson you will give as a driving instructor. They cover all aspects of delivering a driving lesson to a pupil at any stage of learning including complete beginners, partly trained and trained drivers. You can use these manuals to help you prepare your lesson plans.
‘The Complete Driving Instructors Teaching Manual’ is a full colour teaching aid which has illustrations of every lesson in the driving syllabus; and bullet point reminders of the expected lesson plan for each lesson. It is designed for you to use in-car whilst teaching learner drivers. The full colour illustration is on the page nearest the learner and the lesson plan is on the page near you. You can use this manual on the DVSA Part 3 test. Whatever lesson you teach on the test you will have a full colour illustration to help your learner understand the lesson, and to help you remember the core competencies you need to teach that lesson.
We are committed to teaching you to become a confident driving instructor who has the enthusiasm for teaching ‘safe driving for life’ to the next generation of learner drivers. We will invest all of our expertise in you to help you achieve this goal.
